Welcome to Gentrified Little Haiti.
Little Haiti is a community located in Miami, Florida that has had a long history of Gentrification. One of the biggest culprits in the city, is cultural branding. This can be defined as a type of story-telling method that sells a product to seem unique or exotic in this case it is a culture, the Haitian culture, that is being sold. Little Haiti has a flourishing new art scene that includes cuisine, dance, art, and performance all relevant to it's peoples culture. Because of such a rich representation of their heritage many people in the business world have begun to take advantage. Developer's sell this area and this idea of culture sharing when in reality most are only in it for profit, leaving the communities on the backburner and making capital business. They are essentially building over and disregarding a vibrant, beautiful community of people in order to make financial gain. This cultural branding opens the door to a larger issue inside of gentrification, historical erasure. |
“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”
-George Orwell
